Episode 96 — Security Monitoring — SIEM, Log Analysis, and Role Separation

Security monitoring is the ongoing process of collecting and analyzing system activity to detect security threats, policy violations, and abnormal behavior. It provides the visibility needed to recognize attacks in real time, support audits, and respond to incidents. Security monitoring is not limited to firewalls or antivirus software. It includes log analysis, behavioral detection, alert management, and access role oversight. For the Server Plus certification, candidates must understand the components of monitoring systems, how to analyze data, and how to separate roles to ensure trust in the results.
Monitoring is essential because most successful attacks leave clues before or during execution. These clues can be found in authentication logs, configuration changes, failed login attempts, or network traffic patterns. When logs are collected, stored, and analyzed properly, administrators can recognize threats, contain incidents faster, and meet legal reporting requirements. Monitoring also supports compliance by generating reports, audit trails, and alerts tied to policy enforcement.
Security information and event management platforms are the backbone of modern monitoring. These platforms aggregate logs from multiple sources, normalize the data into readable formats, and use built-in rules to detect suspicious behavior. They can generate alerts, display data in dashboards, and support investigations through search and reporting tools. Common platforms include Splunk, Graylog, LogRhythm, and Microsoft Sentinel. Each solution performs similar functions with different levels of customization and scalability.
Log sources must be diverse to provide context. Security information and event management systems pull data from operating system logs, firewall alerts, antivirus reports, authentication logs, and application events. By analyzing input from multiple layers, they can detect complex threats that would be invisible when viewing a single log in isolation. Server administrators must be able to identify which log types are essential and configure log forwarding from each host and network device.
Retention and storage of logs must be handled securely and in accordance with organizational policy and compliance rules. Logs should be retained for a defined period, which may range from three months to seven years, depending on the data type and regulatory requirements. High-volume logs such as firewall traffic may be stored for shorter periods in hot storage, while access logs or audit trails are archived in secure, tamper-evident storage for long-term reference.
Real-time alerting is one of the primary features of a monitoring platform. Security information and event management systems generate alerts based on predefined rules. These rules evaluate log events and trigger alerts for things like privilege escalations, multiple failed login attempts, or unauthorized file deletions. Alerts are prioritized by severity and by the sensitivity of the affected system. Escalation paths define who is notified and how quickly they must respond.
Correlation rules match events over time or across systems. For example, a failed login followed by a successful login from the same I P address, and then a file deletion, may indicate a successful compromise. Behavioral correlation rules compare activity to a user’s normal patterns and flag anomalies. This approach reduces false positives compared to signature-only tools and helps detect subtle or evolving threats that do not match known attack profiles.
Log analysis supports forensic investigations. Administrators can use monitoring platforms to reconstruct what happened during an attack or outage. This includes tracking session activity, command-line usage, file changes, and group membership updates. Log analysis reveals who did what, when, and from where. These findings support post-incident reports, audit responses, and root cause analysis.
Role separation is essential for maintaining trust in the monitoring process. Administrators must not monitor their own actions without oversight. Analysts who investigate security alerts must not have the ability to modify logs or disable alerting systems. Separation of duties reduces the risk of tampering, abuse of privilege, and internal cover-ups. It also ensures that investigations remain objective and auditable.
Transporting and storing logs securely is critical. Log data should be sent over encrypted channels such as Transport Layer Security or virtual private networks. Logs must be written to systems using append-only or immutable formats. Tamper protection can be enforced using cryptographic hashes or checksums that validate log integrity. Any attempt to modify or delete logs must trigger an alert and be included in security event tracking.

Baselining is the process of defining what is normal for a system, user, or application. This includes login frequency, resource usage, network activity, and command behavior. Once a baseline is established, monitoring systems can identify activity that deviates from expected patterns. For example, a user accessing a server for the first time at two a m may be flagged if they typically log in during business hours. Baselines must be updated periodically to reflect changes in user roles, system configurations, or business operations.
Privileged user activity must be monitored with special attention. Domain administrators, database administrators, and other high-privilege users have the ability to make major system changes or access sensitive data. Monitoring tools should log all activity from these accounts, including logins, privilege escalations, command execution, and lateral movement. Some platforms support session recording, which provides a video-style replay of a user's actions. These logs are critical for investigations and audits.
False positives are alerts that flag benign activity as suspicious. Too many false positives lead to alert fatigue, where security teams begin to ignore important messages. Administrators must tune correlation rules, adjust thresholds, and suppress low-risk patterns to reduce unnecessary alerts. This process requires reviewing logs, analyzing behavior, and making data-driven changes to improve signal-to-noise ratio while maintaining visibility into real threats.
Log aggregation and normalization allow data from different sources to be analyzed in a consistent format. Logs from Windows, Linux, firewalls, cloud platforms, and applications use different structures and vocabulary. Security information and event management systems convert these logs into a standard format so that correlation and search functions work across the entire environment. Parsing rules, log agents, or built-in collectors perform this transformation.
Monitoring dashboards provide real-time visual summaries of security posture. They display key metrics such as top alerts, high-risk assets, system health, and open investigations. Dashboards help security operations center staff make fast decisions and help auditors verify that systems are being monitored correctly. Most platforms also support scheduled reporting, which provides daily, weekly, or monthly summaries to stakeholders across technical and management roles.
Change detection tools track modifications to system configurations, files, and services. Administrators must be alerted when unauthorized changes are made to group memberships, startup processes, or sensitive files. File integrity monitoring tools generate hashes for protected files and compare them over time. If a hash changes unexpectedly, the system triggers an alert. This helps detect stealthy changes made by malware or insider threats.
Incident escalation workflows define how alerts are handled based on severity and system impact. A low-priority alert may be logged and reviewed during business hours, while a high-priority alert requires immediate action. Workflows specify who should be contacted, what actions must be taken, and how incidents are documented. Contact trees, ticketing systems, and escalation checklists are used to enforce consistency. These workflows must be reviewed quarterly to reflect staffing or infrastructure changes.
Continuous monitoring ensures that threats are detected regardless of time or location. Cyberattacks often happen outside normal business hours. Organizations must provide twenty-four seven coverage using rotating internal staff or third-party managed detection and response services. Monitoring tools must also be monitored—ensuring they remain online, update regularly, and rotate log files without losing data. Nighttime alerting, shift handoffs, and log availability must all be part of the monitoring strategy.
Security monitoring depends on visibility, precision, and trust. Administrators must deploy the right tools, configure meaningful rules, and assign responsibilities to avoid conflicts of interest. When properly executed, monitoring not only reveals threats—it also creates a verifiable record that supports security governance.
